| These six prints were from photographs taken by 'J Geiser, Alger' early in the 1900s. In 1904 and 1905 Russia sent several fleets to the far east in connection with the Russo Japanese War, which culminated in the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905. Early in 1904 one such force consisting of 12 ships (including the Aurora) under the command of Admiral Virenius was on passage via the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Canal, but that was recalled despite the instincts of Vice Admiral Makarov. That may be connected with these photographs. Click on the ship for enlargement. The originals were kindly donated by Pierre LeFoll, now of Le Baule-Escoublac, France, with detail provided by Pavel Khozhainov. | |||
